Be on the Lookout!

Do you have your Hummingbird Feeders set out yet? Here in our zone 5 location, Hummingbirds began showing up in Mid-April. They are in full feeding frenzy now, building nests and raising little Hummers. We have avoided commercial mixtures because of the red food coloring used in them for several years, preferring to mix our own. We find they like it just as well, and it has no artificial coloring. Just mix 1 cup sugar with 4 cups warm water. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, and fill your feeders. Please - never use artificial sweeteners to attract hummingbirds! They won't get the energy they need to keep those wings humming!

Sneak Peek

We will begin shipping our Bearded Iris around July 5th, but they're blooming NOW! Take a look!

Daylily Salad, Anyone?

Did you know that the daylilies in your garden are edible? The Daylily flowers are indeed edible. They can be used to add color and flavor to stir-fry, salads or soups. In soups and sauces, they are also valuable as a thickener. They are said to have a mild and non-descript flavor, tasting like green beans, lettuce, or zucchini. The Chinese have eaten Daylily blossoms since before they had a written language. The flowers can be used fresh or dried.  Dried Daylily buds, also called "Golden Needles" in Asian Markets, can be rehydrated by soaking in warm to boiling water for 20 minutes or more. When picking your own, be sure to use only fresh blossoms from plants that have not been exposed to herbicides or insecticides, and to remove the stamens. Bon Appetit!
